Sleep vs Hibernate vs Shutdown

🔋 Sleep vs Hibernate vs Shutdown

💤 Sleep

  • What it does: Saves open apps & work in RAM.

  • Power use: Low power (RAM stays active).

  • Wake-up speed: Instant.

  • Best for: Short breaks, quick resume.

  • Downside: Battery still drains slowly.

🛑 Hibernate

  • What it does: Saves open apps & work to the hard drive/SSD.

  • Power use: Almost none (RAM turns off).

  • Wake-up speed: Slower than Sleep, faster than full boot.

  • Best for: Longer breaks or when you’re not charging.

  • Downside: Takes more disk space.

Shutdown

  • What it does: Closes all apps, clears memory, and turns everything off.

  • Power use: Zero.

  • Wake-up speed: Full boot required.

  • Best for: Overnight or when not using the computer for a while.

  • Downside: Takes the longest to start again.

👉 Quick Tip:

  • Sleep = short nap

  • Hibernate = deep sleep

  • Shutdown = complete rest
